| Standards in Collaboration - Till Schuemmer |
 |
Till Schuemmer is a researcher at the Collaborative Systems Group at the FernUniversitaet in Hagen, the German Distance Teaching University. In his research work, he has been concentrating on distilling common functionalities and best practices from the research area of Computer-Supported Collaborative Work. In his most recent book, Patterns for Computer-Mediated Interaction, he co-authored a pattern language that identifies the basic building blocks for supporting computer-mediated interaction. In his current research, he is complementing the language with domain oriented collaboration patterns as well as technology-oriented services. He holds a Diploma in Informatics from the University of Damstadt and a Dr. rer. nat. from the University of Hagen for his research on End-User Centered development of collaborative systems. |

In this session, the participants will investigate the need for collaboration support in the context of collaborative engineering. The theme of collaboration will be addressed from three perspectives: the requirements oriented view which will be illustrated by recurring patterns for supporting collaboration, the tool-oriented view which organizes the existing support technology in based on the core functions that the tools offer, and a service-oriented view that can be used to easily combine different services in a collaborative workplace.
The session consists of two parts: In an initial lecture, Till Schuemmer will shed light on the different views mentioned above. He will highlight the potential for a unified service-driven perspective on collaboration support and point out the potentials for a standardized collaboration service language. The talk will combine the results of different research projects that are currently supported in the FP6 of the European commission, namely the ecoSpace project and the MAPPER project.
In a second phase, all participants are invited in the discussion of common use cases in order to distil common needs for collaboration and investigate how a standardized collaboration service language can contribute to these needs.
